Curatorial Narrative:

The metaphorical figure of the Rang Saaz, the dyer, who reprises throughout South Asian philosophy, art, and literature, serves the visual function of coloring lost souls with the iridescent hues of life. Not to one’s surprise, he also sings poetry, composing rhapsodies to lyres and tablas. The idea of music as a muse for artists has a rich history and while many have traversed, the arguably intangible into a physical form, allowing viewers to see songs in art, contemporary artists continue to add to this rich corpus: with advancements in technology, they are finding yet even more interesting ways to respond to, and represent, the intersections of the world of art and music. Taking this idea forward, Rang-Saazi is a curated showcase for contemporary visual artists to broadly explore and interpret music as a subject and subculture and its influence as an integral part of our collective, historical, and cultural identities. The audiovisual exhibition follows the evolution of art forms from radical design, abstraction, technology, trends, ideas, and new, critical ways of drawing on music as inspiration. Through the interpretation of several Pakistani artists that have emerged in recent years and a variety of mediums, ‘Rang Saazi’ will attempt to broaden the viewer’s perception of how music can inspire the making of art.
