Listening against the grain: in conversation with Kamila Metwaly
I penned a piece for the experimental journal in conversation with Cairo and Berlin based researcher
and curator Kamila Metwaly. We talked about her curiosity, connection and the lasting influence of Egyptian
composer Halim El-Dabh on her life and what it means to journey deep into his sonic cosmos.
The breadth of El-Dabh’s contributions to sound have been the subject of several exhibitions at SAVVY
Contemporary with a focus on community, ways of being, and the deeply regenerative work of “decanonizing.”
Many thanks to Kamila for sharing and to Public Parking for giving a space for reading, thinking and taking the
time to work with writers. It has been inspiring for me to listen up-close the relationship between sound and
the transforming lives of people and places.
